Cornelis Bennema Reviews Mark as Story: Retrospect and Prospect

September 19, 2012

Over at the Review of Biblical Literature, Cor Bennema has provided a very sympathetic and helpful review of our book, Mark as Story: Retrospect and Prospect. His critique includes the following statement: “Today many scholars acknowledge that more ‘mature’ forms of narrative criticism complement, even ‘need,’ historical criticism (cf. in this volume, Powell, 29; Moore, 71; Rhoads, Dewey, and Michie, 270). As such, an essay that addresses the concerns of some critics of narrative criticism would have been helpful” (p. 2). I appreciate this thought and I think Cor is on to something. The relationship between narrative and historical approaches is certainly one of the most important issues in my own scholarship.
