Teaching Hebrew to Undergrads: Any Suggestions?

February 17, 2011

Since I am the “resident expert” in biblical studies at my institution, one of my responsibilities is to teach both of the biblical languages. I have taught Greek for a number of years but this summer will be my first formal experience teaching Hebrew. If anyone is paying attention to this post, I’d love some suggestions for course texts and/or course structuring.

Basics of Biblical Hebrew textbook and workbook by Gary Pratico and Miles Van Pelt is excellent as an introduction to Hebrew.

I also suggest taking a look at the Cambridge Introduction to Biblical Hebrew: Textbook and CD-ROM with Workbook, Answer Key, Paradigms, and Interactive Program by Brian Webster.

We have 2 different style textbooks you could look over (both free PDF but going to a publisher next year) — one more traditional and one designed around bible comic illustrations and using Hebrew in class.

    See here: http://ancienthebrewgrammar.wordpress.com/2011/01/10/hebrew-textbooks-update/

For the illustrated textbook, we have an instructor forum with extra materials.

Have fun! Summer language courses are great.

You can also check Dr Putnam’s website and his recent book entited, “A New Grammar of Biblical Hebrew” published by Sheffiled Phoenix Press (2010). I think it is really fascinating Hebre Grammar book with a fresh apporach.
